Lichun (Beginning of Spring) – When Life Awakens

Lichun(立春), meaning “Beginning of Spring,” is the first of the twenty-four solar terms in the Chinese lunar calendar. It usually arrives in early February, bringing the first hints of warmer weather. Although the chill has not fully disappeared, Lichun signals that winter is ending and that newlifeis on the way. #

During this time, people notice small changes in the environment. Buds start to appear on trees, and some early flowers begin tobloom. Farmers prepare their land, checking tools and seeds, and in southern China, the rice fields may be filled with water in readiness for planting. The sound of birds is heard more often, and days slowly grow longer.

Lichun is also important for family traditions. In many regions, people enjoy eating spring pancakes or freshvegetablesto welcome the season. A well-known custom is to make “biting the spring” food, such as carrots or green onions, as a symbol of good health and good harvest in the coming year.
